Potential & Longevity

Two hidden attributes shape every player's long-term arc: Potential and Longevity. You can't see them on the card, but they're running in the background the entire time, controlling how good a player can get and when their career ends.

Example of an MFL Player's career progression

Potential (POT)

Potential is the maximum OVR a player can reach in their primary position. That's the ceiling. No matter how much you train and develop them, they won't go past it.

DetailWhat It Means
PermanentSet at minting, cannot be changed or influenced in any way
Position-lockedApplies to the primary position only. Secondary position (-1 penalty) means the effective cap is POT minus 1
The scouting gapCurrent OVR vs. POT is the development runway you're working with

A young player at 52 OVR with high POT is a development project. A player at 73 OVR with 75 POT is close to maxed out. Scouting well means finding players with big gaps between their current OVR and their hidden POT, then developing them before age catches up.

Longevity (LON)

Longevity determines when aging kicks in and when a player retires. Like POT, it's hidden and set from the start.

LON ranges from 0 to 10 and maps to retirement ages between 32 and 42. For example, a player with LON 2 will retire when they turn 34 (at the end of the season during which they were 33). Most players retire between the ages of 34 and 36.

Players age by one year per season. This includes players sitting in unopened packs -- they still age. The only exception is players held in the MFL account (reserved for future drops or MFL Store Reward Packs).

The Final Three Seasons

Watch for the warning signs. Starting three seasons before retirement, a player enters decline. You'll notice:

  • Energy depletes faster during matches -- they tire out earlier and need more rotation
  • Recovery slows down between matches -- they take longer to bounce back
  • Effects intensify in the final season -- the last stretch is rough

This isn't a cliff. It's a gradual squeeze that forces you to manage their workload more carefully each season.

Retirement

When a player's final season concludes, their contract ends automatically. Players cannot play or sign a new contract after their final season. That's it. Career over.

Planning Ahead

Since POT and LON are hidden and cannot be predicted, every signing carries some uncertainty. A player who looks great today might retire sooner than you expect, or have less development room than you hoped. That mystery is part of the game.

Balance your squad between proven performers and younger players who still have room to grow. That's how dynasties are built.
