Playoffs
Playoffs decide who gets promoted and who gets relegated when the regular season isn't enough to settle it. They happen during the post-season phase and are some of the highest-stakes matches in MFL.

Promotion Playoffs
Not everyone who earns a playoff spot takes the same path. How far you finished in the league determines how many rounds you need to win.
2nd Place: Direct Playoff
Second-place teams from two different leagues in the same division face off in a Direct Playoff.
- Win and you're promoted immediately.
- Lose and you still have a shot. You drop into the playoff bracket and need to win two more rounds to go up.
3rd Place: Three Rounds to Promotion
Third-place teams start from the bottom of the bracket. You need to win three consecutive playoff rounds to earn promotion.
Here's how the rounds connect:
| Round | Who Plays |
|---|---|
| Playoff Round 1 | 3rd-place teams from two leagues play each other |
| Playoff Round 2 | Round 1 winner vs. the loser of the Direct Playoff (2nd place) |
| Playoff Round 3 | Round 2 winner earns promotion. The loser also faces the 9th-place team from the upper division fighting to avoid relegation |
Relegation Playoffs
In a standard 12-team league:
- 10th, 11th, and 12th place are automatically relegated. No second chances.
- 9th place enters a relegation playoff in Round 3 against a team trying to get promoted from below. Lose and you go down with them. Win and you survive another season.
Smaller Leagues
Not every league has exactly 12 teams. The number of automatic relegations adjusts accordingly:
| League Size | Auto-Relegated | Playoff Position | Avg. Relegations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 teams | Bottom 3 (10th-12th) | 9th | ~3.5 |
| 11 teams | Bottom 2 (10th-11th) | 9th | ~2.5 |
| 10 teams | Bottom 1 (10th) | 9th | ~1.5 |
| 9 teams | None | 9th (maybe) | ~0.5 |
| 8 or fewer | None | None | 0 |
Promotion numbers stay the same regardless of league size. On average, 1.75 teams get promoted per league. The imbalance between promotions and relegations is intentional. It means the upper divisions gradually fill over time as the player base grows.
Why It Matters
Playoffs create a middle ground between guaranteed promotion and guaranteed relegation. Finishing 2nd or 3rd isn't automatic, but it gives you a real chance to fight your way up. And finishing 9th isn't a death sentence, but you'd better show up when it counts.
These matches tend to be the most intense of the season. One game decides whether your club moves up a tier or drops down. Plan your squad rotation during the regular season so your best players have energy left when playoffs arrive.
